Regional Workshop on "Alternative Technologies for Wastewater Treatment"

 

On June 30, the Country Water Partnership NGO, jointly with its partners “JINJ” engineering-consulting company, Sustainable Water Environment NGO and Vanadzor Aarhus Center organized and held a regional workshop in Vanadzor on "Alternative Technologies for Wastewater Treatment".
The seminar was aimed at identifying the possibilities for alternative technologies of municipal wastewater treatment, as well as informing the decision-makers and broad strata of society in Lori region on the current situation of the sanitation sector and the possibilities of solutions for the problems resulting from this situation.
Representatives of Lori LGBs, Spitak, Stepanavan and Vanadzor municipalities, as well as the State Environmental Inspectorate and MH State Inspectorate’s Lori regional health centers, Vanadzor and Alaverdi Aarhus centers, local NGOs and media took part in the Workshop.
The Workshop speakers presented the current situation of wastewater removal and treatment in Armenia, as well as the document "Towards the development of sustainable sanitation strategy in Armenia" developed in 2014 with the financial support of OECD.The specialists represented also alternative technologies of municipal wastewater treatment, as well as their application in Armenia. They also spoke about modern public toilets.
The representatives of the Environmental and Health inspectorates’ Lori regional departments represented the health problems associated with the removal and treatment of wastewater and the untreated wastewater impact on the environment.
During the Workshop, the representatives of Stepanakert municipality and Margartahovit village community expressed their willingness to join efforts to find the appropriate funding for building domestic waste water treatment plants in their settlements. According to the proposal of Vanadzor Aarhus Centre's representative, it is intended to raise funds for installing a compact WWTP at the nursing home of Vanadzor, the household sewage of which is without treatment directly discharged into the river in the area of the resort zone.
